Summary:
The Anunnaki Project began the Scapegoat performances, a series of performance art pieces that initiate the principles of The Anunnaki Project, in 1997.
Principle:
Based upon the scapegoat archetype, The Anunnaki Project worked to build a ritual theatre performance that integrated the audience into the production in an intimate way.
Development:
Primitive street theatre integrated with a strong mythical theme produced a highly energetic and powerful performance.
We created "The Scapegoat", a wire framed goat that was to be dragged about the festival and filled with 'sins' from the attendees. Built by Maque Davis, John Mullally and John Murphy, the goat was a 3' wire mesh structure.
At the end of the evening, the goat and written 'sins' were placed atop a pillar and ignited with sawdust fireballs.
Retrospective:
This project led to a series of productions based on the scapegoat archetype, and was the organization's first exploration of audience-interactive performance.
