Summary:
For New Year's Eve 2000, artist Carl Smool produced a set of sculptures that were to contain the hopes and dreams of the city, to be burned at midnight. Due to a terrorism threat, the Seattle mayor canceled the scheduled event, and it was postponed to the vernal equinox, March 19th.
Members of The Cabiri, Circus Contraption, and Vancouver's Spiral Kiss played an integral role as costumed performers in the prelude to Carl Smool's "At the Crossroads" fire ceremony.
Retrospective:
Along with Smool's wood and paper-mache sculptures, more than 10,000 handwritten
wishes and dreams from the city's residents and visitors were burned. The motley
crew of costumed performers, from devils to buffoons to stilt- walking
sorcerers, acted as the distributors and collectors of the dreams and wishes,
and helped explain the ceremony and its significance to attendees.
