morozko
10/21/11
The north wind is often referred to as the cold breath of Jack Frost, old man winter, the king of the frozen forest. This is the name that we westerners have for the spirit of the winternacht.
In the woods of the Slavs he has a much older name and a much greater title than simply Jack Frost. In the forests east of the Danube he is known as Morozko, the lord of the frozen forest.
In this land there was a poor Russian pauper girl Nastenka, that suffered at the hand of an evil step mother. In that land, in a bye-gone age, resources were scarce and having two daughters put a burden on the quality of life. When a man remarries and the new wife brings in a daughter there is a tension that is often solved with an unpleasant solution. An accident, an unfortunate ending, a sad tale. In the land of the Rus, these tests were a terrifying reality and in the harsh winters, a child’s stoicism was tested and weakness was purged in the merciless cold of winter.
