Mut

Cultures: Romanian
Performances: Dance of the Calusari
Definition:The Mut is the polar opposite of the Vataf. He operates as a trickster figure, at once challenging the Vataf and also supporting him. The Mut will often act in ways that are chaotic and irreverent, sometimes with his sword and sometimes with a large wooden phallus. He is attired in part as a Calusari and in part as a fair maiden. He often wears a mask, and he is always part of the ritual drama when it is performed.
