James Whetzel
James studied European Classical guitar with Gavin Douglas and Palm Wine and Odonson style guitar with Daniel Amponsah aka Koo Nimo. He is a versatile musician. His talents include throat singing, and the performance of Hindustani Classical music on sarode and tabla. He also plays darbouka, which he studied first in Morocco with ustad larabi aguinou, and then later with Salah Dawson Miller. His most recent recordings include his solo CD Sum, and James Whetzel Live! Vol. 1 a collection of recordings from live performances in 2001 and 2002.
Raqs Halim Tribal Fusion Bellydance
Weaving together dance styles and cultural nuances from the Near and Middle East, North Africa, India, Spain, and all along the Romany trail, Raqs Halim performs a distinct blend of group and solo improvised and choreographed dance pieces that are both beautiful and mesmerizing. Bellydance is one of the most ancient forms of dance, passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter, generation to generation. Tribal styles of bellydance strive to express the spirit of celebration, sacredness and unity that was the original purpose of dance in a tribal community. This ensemble of dancers has earned an ever growing following and reputation for artistic and innovative performances throughout the Pacific Northwest.
The Cabiri
The Cabiri performance troupe combines aerial dance, trapeze, stiltwalking, character acting, and fire performance to create visually striking theatrical productions. The six members of the troupe live, work, and play in Seattle, and have worked together since 1997. The Cabiri are storytellers and theatrical emissaries for The Anunnaki Project, a nonprofit organization devoted to using performative mythology to tell the tales of cultures that have passed into antiquity. They were recently featured as the headlining act in the Pantages Theater and on the Pierce Transit Mainstage at Tacoma's First Night festival on New Year's Eve 2001.
The Maenads
Fusing ritual elements with bellydance technique, The Maenads create captivating performances for all occasions. They combine tribal improvisation with choreography and unique props set to mesmerizing music.
Ensemble Sub Masa - Transylvanian Jazz Hoedown
An acoustic quartet specializing in the music of South Eastern Europe, including Jewish party tunes, Romanian and Hungarian urban and village suites, and Turkish dance jams. They perform regularly at Seattle's Solstice Cafe and other venues.
Elizabeth Dennis
Elizabeth uses a fusion of dance styles and her knowledge of yoga to create a unique belly dance experience. She calls her style of dance 'Lillabelli Dance', roughly translated, this means 'divine belly'.
