Spiral Tree

The Commagene Hart in Ankara’s Town Square

There is a place…
Betwixt and between
A forest we once walked in
In our earliest of dreams
Where dryads danced
In green forest light
And the Hart of the forest
In the hunt took flight
Have you seen these sights?
Can you see them still?
In the deep of the forest
On the distant hill
Can you see them now…
I think that you could
You can if you will…
Your will is this wood…

Two very powerful themes of nature that penetrate the human condition are the Hart of the Wood and the World Tree. Originally this performance was arranged around the singularity of the Tree, but the realization that there was a necessary protagonist in the imaginal realm soon followed.

With dryads and the hunters, the presence of the Hart was a natural progression. The two forces coming together in their nightly meeting was an assemblage that flowed from someplace far deeper than simple psyche. The Hart rose its antlers to the task in a picture of “The Sorcerer” from Lascaux cave. It was only weeks after the choreography that the image of the stag in the tree from pre-Roman Anatolia was presented to us.

Unless the folly of man succeeds in slaying the last forest, the Hart of the wood will be out in the night, running between the worlds as we dream the connection of the spiraling tree.
