The Kojiki or "Records of Past Matters", is a collection of stories from the Yamato court in early Japan (800 CE). This collection of stories contains information regarding the ancient Shinto deities and their relation to the land of the rising sun.
In our story, the impetuous storm god Susano-o frightens the sun goddess Amaterasu out of the sky and into a cave. As the world darkens and chaos abounds, the Kami (deities) of the land unite to lure Amaterasu out of hiding by holding a festival of great beauty and alluring spectacle.
